My argument of giving examples like videogames and pirated stuff are there to simply to say that the MTRCB is futile in protecting children from these elements. If the law is futile, there should be a need to revise it. Is the MTRCB law at a fault for this? Frankly, tangentially yes. Why? Because the present law is an old statute made before the existence of optical media (which is now regulated by the optical media board) and video games (which is not regulated at all). So the best alternative is to do away with the old law, and make a new one. How could self-regulation lead to more protection from sex and violence? Seriously. it won't (the same way that MTRCB doesn't) but at least it doesn't curtail certain constituional freedoms in the guise of moralistic assessment. Arguments? read the article I wrote, and if you want more, browse on the footnotes.

If you want protection from sex and violence, go to a convent.Oggs Cruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03041599863258946384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-76315010321022056122007-08-24T08:43:00.000+08:002007-08-24T08:43:00.000+08:00Are videogames covered by the MTRCB statute? If you think that children are less protected even with an MTRCB that is mandated by a very restrictive law, how could self-regulation lead to more protection from sex and violence? I'm all for freedom of expression, and even if it's not absolute, any restrictions and limitations should be the exception, and free expression the rule.

I'm also for the repeal of the MTRCB law, and, as noted in my previous post, against self-regulation. I wish those legislators who have a penchant for investigations in aid of legislation would also spend time crafting laws.

Morato might have been "out of hand" at times, but I still think he did the job expected of him by the existing law, however flawed and unconstitutional it may be. But I have a problem with somebody, like Armida, who sits as MTRCB chair but then goes about picking and choosing to apply only those policies that won't ruffle too many feathers in the industry that she also belongs to. It's like somebody who doesn't totally believe in the Bible, but wants to become a priest.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-11108860039997660172007-08-23T11:04:00.000+08:002007-08-23T11:04:00.000+08:00Hi Anonymous,Actually if you read the MTRCB law, i...Hi Anonymous,

Actually if you read the MTRCB law, it really is a transitionary statute which promises a future of self-regulation for the TV and movie industries. In that way, Armida is correct and it is the government's fault for not keeping in line with the promise since the time of Marcos.

Morato is out of hand. Although he has a staunch personal belief, such shouldn't get in the way of his governmental functions. There's a law, utilize the law. But if the law has a lot of loopholes allowing personality to be factor in governance, then that law should be abolished for something better... like self-regulation. I'm not a fan of Morato, but I certainly won't fault him for implementing such ultra-conservative policies, which mostly are in line with his personal beliefs.

In an interview, Armida said "I agreed to serve along with 15 insiders from the movie industry since we were assured na transition lang iyon. We were promised a few more years and we would get a self regulatory system for our movies."

She has been lobbying for an industry self-regulating body to replace the MTRCB. A case of "to have one's cake and eat it too" if you ask me. I just think there's too many conflicts of interest within the movie and tv industry for such a body to fairly serve both the public and industry's interests. In fact, Armida was once charged in the Sandiganbayan of having a conflict of interest when she was the MTRCB chair while allegedly maintaining a "direct corporate interest in Reyna Films" at the same time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-37612194661419554632007-08-23T00:43:00.000+08:002007-08-23T00:43:00.000+08:00Hi Ronald,There's no need to amend the Constitutio...Hi Ronald,

There's no need to amend the Constitution to abolish the MTRCB.
