It's, yeah, closer to the book's nonesense. I really love it. Though, I'd love to see it again in it's original language.

Nice review Oggs!Epoy Deytohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14787308187083484304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-8248018211675924852010-04-12T09:25:30.048+08:002010-04-12T09:25:30.048+08:00Hi Noel,

Svankmajer's is closer to the books than any version I've seen; the books aren't exactly pleasant literature; there's a lot of sensuality and/or sexuality hidden in the imagery used, and Svankmajer's unabashed use of phallic symbols and other grotesqueries is quite apt. That being said, its contemptuous to what we normally think of Alice as propagated by Disney.

Burton could have done better, the same way he turned Batman more sexy, or turned Willy Wonka more deranged, or turned Sweeney Todd even more broken. If there's anything bubbling underneath Burton's version, it is too subtle to be certain of.Oggs Cruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03041599863258946384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-80293637125194636792010-04-12T04:48:46.784+08:002010-04-12T04:48:46.784+08:00Oh, I didn't think Svankmajer's version wa...Oh, I didn't think Svankmajer's version was contemptuous; if anything it's closer to the spirit of the books than this version.

Good call on the color palette. I'm of mixed mind about this movie too--think it's too close to Disney, not enough Svankmajer.Noel Verahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904212081036547668noreply@blogger.com
