They had very successful campaigns later on to eradicate foot binding, concubinage and such.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-43579000501020451712007-11-13T11:05:00.000+08:002007-11-13T11:05:00.000+08:00Well, Tian's version is flashier and seems to be d...Well, Tian's version is flashier and seems to be drowned with atmosphere; the original is much more straightforward and is more urgent. Both are very good, I prefer the original one. Tian's masterpiece is still The Horse Thief, mystical and mysterious, I wanna watch it again.

I remember not like Jia's The World, but I'd give it another try.Oggs Cruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03041599863258946384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-27149784624528890762007-11-13T11:01:00.000+08:002007-11-13T11:01:00.000+08:00Whoa, sorry. I remember these early Chinese films I saw -- Street Angel and A Spring River Flows East -- they are quite good but I don't know, must be the culture. And I read your review of Tian's remake of Springtime in A Small Town -- I like that film as well. Reminds me of Jia Zhangke for weird reasons. Haha.)

I haven't seen the original -- I missed it again in Quiapo. They had a whole lot of old, old Chinese films down there. Was it that good? Yeah -- Jia Zhangke interests me. I enjoyed Artisan Pickpocket and Still Life very much.digitalburyonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13564519967089293558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-9197906521684859782007-11-13T10:58:00.000+08:002007-11-13T10:58:00.000+08:00Have you seen the original Spring in a Small Town?...Have you seen the original Spring in a Small Town? That one's terrific. I'm also on the lookout for those classic Chinese films. Jia Zhangke is turning out to be a very good director huh?Oggs Cruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03041599863258946384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-22897506259063491442007-11-13T10:49:00.000+08:002007-11-13T10:49:00.000+08:00Thanks chard, That's very true. Makes me wonder what went wrong with The Promise and his American film. I haven't seen The Blue Kite yet, I'm gonna look out for it.Oggs Cruzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03041599863258946384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31058461.post-63593455520134756442007-11-13T10:33:00.000+08:002007-11-13T10:33:00.000+08:00What strikes me most about Yellow Earth is its sub...What strikes me most about Yellow Earth is its subtlety -- of course we all know that it is political -- but unlike Zhang Yimou's great, great early works (Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, et al), it moves slowly without showing us the harsh elements of the regime, and works more on metaphors -- the river, the death, the town, the soldiers. It was a great headstart for the Fifth Generation, though I haven't seen The Blue Kite yet, have you? Anyway, you are consistently cool in your writing Oggs. Keep 'em coming. :Ddigitalburyonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13564519967089293558noreply@blogger.com
