It's very close to the feeling I got when watching some of the episodes of Band of Brothers. Nature -- the jungle and sea -- took centerstage. The throwing of the bible, destroying of the icons, etc., I didn't take as symbolisms but more of an act of vandalism by a bunch of bandits. I don't think that the movie is black and white at all, it showed that the Muslim bandits are victims too. Most of them radicalised/brainwashed when they were very young. A lot of them were victims of violence too. Also of their officers who, some were there because of faith, some because of money or power.
